The Future Is In your Hands! Minimize

"If you want to know how the shoe fits, ask the person who is wearing it, not the one who made it."

What makes your community a good place to live? How do great places develop? How do we create vibrant and healthy communities? How do we protect the environment and sustain jobs?

The This Place Matters Initiative is a multi-year program developed by An Taisce and funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage & Local Government. Our aim is simple - to get more people involved with shaping their local community and environment through the planning process.

“The greatest mistake a person can ever make is to do nothing for fear of not being able to do enough!”

Ireland's Planning Portal for Communities !

This website is designed to provides free up-to-date planning information and advice to local communities and environmental organisations and to facilitate and support local stakeholder participation in the planning process development plans in an informed and effective way.

Planning is critical for shaping the future of Irish society and, to be effective, the input of local communities is an essential. One of the key lessons of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ era is that the absence of proper planning and community participation in the planning process were major contributors to the creation of the one of the largest property bubbles ever experienced anywhere in the world. This has left a deep and long-lasting legacy of poorly planned communities and stored up significant economic, social and environmental problems and costs for future generations.

Planning is about bringing the future into the present, so that we can do something about it now. In the post-celtic tiger era growing numbers of residents, community groups and environmental organisations are now getting involved  in shaping their local  environment to become safer, prosperous and more sustainable.

At An Taisce we believe in collaborative and active citizenry, and in striving for a fair, open and inclusive planning system. Community planning is about everyone in a community, not just one group. Empowering communities to work together allows everyone to achieve more than they could do on their own.

You cannot be expected to become an expert on planning- but you can make a valuable contribution to your community through the planning process. It is hoped this will website will assist in capacity building, networking and act as a valuable tool to all those seeking to engage in the planning system and influence what happens in their area.
